By in-situ growth of MnO2 on solid SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and then removal of SiO2 nuclei, highly dispersed hollow manganese dioxide (h-MnO2) with uniform morphology can be obtained. The obtained h-MnO2 is further used to load anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) and subsequently modified with biocompatible and biodegradable polydopamine (PDA), finally to form polydopamine-coated DOX/h-MnO2 nanocomposites (DOX/h-MnO2@PDA). Due to the photothermal of PDA, photodynamic performance of the h-MnO2, and chemical therapy effect of DOX, the obtained DOX/h-MnO2@PDA can be used to inhibit tumor cells via a photo-chemical synergetic therapy method.
