Tunable nanochannels through graphene oxide/polymer core-shell nanosheets for enhanced proton conductivity

Simultaneous manipulation of the topological structure and chemical structure of the ionic nanochanels within solid electrolyte has been proved a crucial but challenging task for the rational design of high-performance electrochemical devices including proton exchange membrane fuel cell. Herein, we present a novel approach to the construction of tunable nanochannels via direct assembly of graphene oxide (GO)/polymer core-shell nanosheets. Through molecular-level engineering of the GO/polymer nanosheets, the ordered, continuous nanochannels, interconnected hydrogen-bond networks and favorable water environment of the ionic nanochannels can be facilely created. The resultant membrane exhibits a proton conductivity of 32 mS cm-1 at 51% RH, surpassing the state-of-the-art Nafion membrane and all the reported GO based materials.
