Monodisperse samarium-doped ceria nanocrystals have been rapidly synthesized by a microemulsion-mediated hydrothermal method with secondary light irradiation treatment. The microemulsion system consists of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide and n-butanol and n-octane, acting as the surfactant, cosurfactant and oil phase, respectively. The as-synthesized nano powder is characterized by well-dispersed rhombohedral particles with their size in the range of 75 to 85 nm. The results demonstrate that it could effectively inhibit coarsening and agglomeration of the product nanocrystals during the phase formation process by using the light irradiation treatment instead of conventional heat treatment.
