brief introduction:
Polymer/fullerenes [C60] nanocomposites can be considered to be environmentally friendly alternatives to some traditional flame retardants. The presence of C60 can markedly delay the thermal oxidation degradation and reduce the flammability of polypropylene at very low loading. It can decrease the heat release rate of polymeric materials through trapping the free radicals created from the process of thermal degradation and combustion, and subsequently forming three-dimensional gelled networks. This network can increase the melt viscosity of melt and consequently slow down the combustion. Furthermore, the incorporation of C60 does not affect the physical properties of the polymer.
Obviously, polymer/C60 nanocomposites offer novel strategies for developing flame retardant polymeric materials. However, it does not behave well in the traditional fire retardation tests, such as LOI and UL test. Thus in the future, more work need to be done on this problem and the synergistic effect of C60and other traditional fire retardants.
